Yep. We’ve moved.

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008

If you frequent East Park Ave, you’ll probably notice a bit less blue on the street. We enjoyed nearly 2 years at 107 East Park Ave. It was great to be in a building that old with a view of McPherson Park.

Moving wasn’t easy (those desks are heavy…), but we chose to in order to gain some new perspective on our new web manufacturing focus.

We’re not in a top secret office somewhere in the upstate. We’ve gone low profile again (in the real world, anyway) in order to focus on our digital domain.

We’ll be trotting out some new services and BlueInk 2.0 will be making it’s debut here within the month! It’s helped to have the added focus.

So, watch for us online. We’ll be increasingly easy to find.

  • Custom Field type ‘file’ was added to allow for specific attachments to Projects, Contacts, Companies, and Tasks.
  • Many speed improvements.
  • Item level permissions for Roles.
  • Permission Cache settings now available to Sys Admins.

BigBlueHat dotProject hosting clients will be receiving these new changes soon as part of their service. Stay tuned for more information on other upcoming improvements to dotProject.

Chasing the Read/Write Web

Tuesday, July 22nd, 2008

Tim Berners-Lee, the real inventor of the Internet, first conceived the web as a two-way form of communication: if you could read pages on the web, you could write pages on the web. The first browser, known as WordWideWeb, could do both (at least locally). Most browsers since then can only read web pages, and other pieces of software (Frontpage, Dreamweaver, etc) have been used to edit them.

Over the past several years, blogging and wiki’s have become popular because they get just a bit closer to the original vision of the Web: read and write from one place.

BlueInk version 2.0 will take that the rest of the way. In BlueInk v2, the editor can log in “over” the page they’re editing, make changes to that page while viewing it, and log back out. All of this happens from the same URL without a separate back-end interface.

This functionality is a turning point for the Web. We look forward to sharing it with the world soon.

Greenville, SC —This week Tyler Minard of Duncan, SC joined BigBlueHat for his 3 month internship. Tyler is a recent high school graduate with an interest in web development and computer networking. For the first several weeks, Tyler will be adding to his knowledge about HTTP, HTML, and other web technologies.

While at BigBlueHat Tyler will have the opportunity to work on the BlueInk Content Management System and several client projects. His work will include adding new features written in PHP, working with the front-end interface of BlueInk, and helping BigBlueHat migrate much of its code to the REST-based architectural style.

“It was good to find that Tyler already knew so much about HTTP and Web Technology,” said Benjamin Young, President of BigBlueHat. “The initial survey showed he’s very capable of getting involved with our projects quickly.”

Tyler’s internship will last for approximately three months, after which he’ll begin his first term at Spartanburg Community College. From there, he plans to transfer to the University of South Carolina Upstate where he will pursue a degree in the Information Technology field.

BigBlueHat is a web-manufacturing company that creates custom web sites and web-based software for clients around the world. Its chief product is the BlueInk CMS, a proprietary content management system that accommodates both the designer and the end user with an easy-to-use interface.
